Biotin (vitamin H) is not a true vitamin at all, but works in cooperation with several B-group vitamins to break down and metabolize fats in the body. It is present in many common foods such as nuts, fruit, egg yolk, milk, and brewer’s yeast. In addition, healthy bacteria found in the intestines are also a source of natural biotin. Helps to maintain healthy hair and skin.
People who consume excessive amounts of alcohol, refined foods, egg whites, and need to use antibiotics on a long-tern basis can deplete their body’s biotin levels. Egg whites contain a protein called avidin that impairs the absorption of biotin. Some dieters limit their intake of egg yolks to decrease caloric intake, so in this case it can be important. People who have seizures (Epileptics) are required to take anticonvulsive medication are susceptible to having too little biotin, as do alcoholics. These groups would find benefit from biotin supplementation. One cannot take too much biotin, as it is water-soluble and easily excreted if not needed.
